How NSF’s ADVANCE Program Promotes Gender Equity in Academia
An interesting article that offers suggestions around strategies to reduce the gender gap in STEM fields. The author argues that to lessen this gender gap, “it is necessary to transform the institution, not ” fix ” the women.” This is the fundamental principle behind the NSF ADVANCE IT (Institutional Transformation) awards. UNC Charlotte was awarded an ADVANCE IT award in 2006, and in 2013, the ADVANCE Office was institutionalized so that the programming and initiatives that were put into place during the course of the grant could continue to be implemented and built upon with full institutional support. It is encouraging to report that thirteen years since the first ADVANCE awards were made, changes are beginning to be seen in the academy.
